Project Profile: Morning Star Bakery and Café

Some interiors are designed to be admired. Others are designed to be experienced. Morning Star Bakery & Café, located in Bath Township, belongs firmly in the latter. The European-inspired bakery aims to create an authentic connection between guests and bakers.

This project transformed a vacant 2,752-square-foot tenant space into a bakery and café where the architecture is as much a part of the experience as the coffee and pastries. Collaboration was key as AVID Architects worked with Peninsula Architects to bring Eric and Darcie Bosshard’s vision to life.

“The owners were focused on creating a distinctly different café experience from day one,” says Lauren Lieser, architectural designer at AVID Architects. “Their collaborative approach during the early design and inspiration meetings made it possible to create a space that feels authentic to their vision.”

AVID completely reimagined the interior layout, defining the dining area, centrally located café bar, service counter, kitchen, back-of-house support spaces, storage, vestibule and restrooms, all organized to support efficient operations while reinforcing the guest experience. Peninsula carried the vision forward with authentic finishes inspired by the Bosshards’ adventures to Japan and Copenhagen.

The café bar serves as both the functional and visual centerpiece of the space. Positioned at the center of the floor plan, the expansive display cases transform hand-crafted pastries into works of art, while the open preparation island allows guests to watch bakers mix, shape and finish products throughout the day. Above, a custom wood grid ceiling with mirrored panels reflects the movement below, while a large service window offers a glimpse into the kitchen, allowing guests to follow each pastry from preparation to presentation.

“One of my favorite aspects of the project is that the baking happens right in the open,” says Joe Matava, of Peninsula Architects. “It informs and educates guests about what they’re purchasing while creating a memorable experience that goes beyond simply ordering coffee and pastries.”

Every design decision reinforces the café’s commitment to authenticity and quality. Warm materials, thoughtful sightlines and an inviting atmosphere encourage guests to slow down, stay awhile and appreciate the artistry behind every cup of coffee and freshly baked pastry.
